Q&A: Rowntree on ‘Ethical’ Porn Search Engine Boodigo.com

From XBIZ.com

CONCORD, Mass. — Boodigo.com is quickly finding fans.

So far, in its first few days, the adult search engine has racked up more than 1 million unique visitors and one of its founders, Colin Rowntree, hasn’t stopped giving interviews to the numerous mainstream media outlets that have approached him.

Boodigo isn’t the first search engine designed exclusively for porn (there have been others that delved into porn searches, including Search.xxx — reserved only for .xxx searches — and Booble.com, among others).

But it has found a hook in marketing itself as a search engine for the ethical porn fan, directing surfers to the genuine sites of performers and paysites in a secure, private and anonymous environment with no tracking, registration or cookies.

Boodigo, like Search.xxx’s commitment, also proactively eliminates sites from its responses that are known security threats, distributors of malware or perpetrators of fraud, and works with rights holders to ensure that unlicensed and illegal copies of their creative works are not found in the search results.

XBIZ on Wednesday chatted with Rowntree, the longtime operator and founder of BDSM site Wasteland.com, to find out more about how his new project, Boodigo, got its start and his inspirations to rope in porn fans searching on the web.

A team of former Google engineers has designed a search engine just for porn

“Boodigo” might be the best new way to find porn without selling users’ fantasies to advertisers.

If there’s a porn version of everything, there had to be a porn version of Google, right? But of course there is: Meet Boodigo, the Internet search engine specifically for pornographic content, brought to life by a team of “Google refugees” who wanted to forgo the unsexy content that appears in many search results in place of adult entertainment.

There are plenty of reasons to search for porn on Boodigo — besides the obvious convenience of not having to wade through 289 Cosmo articles in your quest for the perfect porno. The site, as I noted earlier, aims to only populate its search results with legal — in other words, not pirated — porn.

As a long-time producer and director, Mr. Rowntree has experienced the hugely damaging effects of porn piracy first-hand. When people share and view adult entertainment without paying for it, “it’s horrible for the performers, for the studios, for everybody,” Mr. Rowntree said. Though he acknowledges that chasing illegal online porn distributors will “always be a cat and mouse game,” he’s certain that Boodigo has “done a very good job at identifying the illegal tube sites.”

“They’re basically just blacklisted from ever getting into the search results,” he said.

Ex-Googlers Help Build ‘Boodigo,’ a New Search Engine Just for Porn
For when Google just isn’t sexy enough.

A couple of years ago, porn producer and director Colin Rowntree started feeling that mainstream search engines, like Google and Bing, where “trying to ghettoize the adult entertainment industry,” as he puts it. Google “blow job,” and you generally have to click through three pages of totally un-sexy content — you know, like a Wikipedia entry on the phrase’s etymology — before you actually arrive at the porn sites you were looking for in the first place.

“It’s this corporate cowardice thing that’s been going on the last several years,” he told me over the phone. “Mainstream companies that have investors [or are] trying to go public [are] trying to distance themselves completely from adult entertainment.”
