Controversial Gay Ads Allowed to Remain in Netherlands

Despite Complaints, Advertising Standards Board Permits Campaign for Gay Cruising & Hookup Site Squirt.org to Continue!

AMSTERDAM (December 21, 2015) –– Controversial gay advertisements for Squirt.org will remain posted in major cities in the Netherlands. Despite three complaints filed, which required a review, the Advertising Standards Board has ruled in favor of the cruising and hookup website and will permit it to continue its promotional campaign.

Since October 1, 2015, posters and signs featuring Squirt.org models appeared throughout the Netherlands’ major railway stations. The stations include: Amsterdam Central, Amsterdam Sloterdijk, Amsterdam Zuid, Rotterdam Blaak, Den Haag Central, Den Haag HS, and Utrecht Central.

The three complaints filed about the Squirt.org posters stated they were “terrible” and “sickening and shocking,” and it was “highly inappropriate to promote such websites in public places…”

Attila Szatmari, digital business director for Pink Triangle Press, Squirt’s parent company, wrote a defense of the advertising on November 11. Addressed to Dutch Advertising Code Authority, Szatmari wrote, “Squirt.org is promoted through print, online, and outdoor advertising in numerous cities throughout the world. Our decision to advertise our product and officially launch in the Netherlands was driven by how gay friendly the country is and was notably the first country to embrace gay marriage.”

“Gay imagery on advertising (solo guys, couples, families) and/or shirtless imagery is not something new for the Netherlands, and we believe that this creative does not violate Article 2 of the Dutch Advertising Code. The Netherlands has led the world in recognizing gay rights, fostering a thriving gay community; Squirt.org is a service targeted at gay men and is relevant to the community, as well as legally allowed to be advertised,” continued Szatmari.

In his defense, Szatmari provided examples of other Dutch ad campaigns with men in equally provocative poses, including a series of billboards titled “Male Stripper,” which was considered one of the country’s more clever campaigns.

The recent rulings in favor of Squirt.org is available on the Advertising Standards Board’s website, here, here, and here. It states the Squirt.org posters do not violate their advertising code.

The Netherlands’ campaign also includes various gay and mainstream print and online publications. As part of its massive promotion, Squirt.org is offering a one-year free membership to new and existing users – the gratis period is typically 10 days in other markets.

Earlier this year, high-profile advertising and promotional campaigns from Squirt.org made headlines in Miami, Toronto, San Francisco, and Chicago. The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) recently removed Squirt.org posters from its subway cars and stations despite its policy of tolerance and equality, as reported on by BuzzFeed.com.

Bus stop advertisements for Squirt.org were also removed in Miami in 2014, as documented by Miami’s Channel 10 News. One of the posters was even vandalized, though the culprit remained unknown until a viral video hit the Internet in September 2015. In the video, a man identifies himself as a veteran of the United States Marine Corp, before he trashes the poster for being “disrespectful.” DailyXtra.com reported on the correlation between the incident in 2014 and the video.
