Gay Community Accused of Racism in Online Dating

Survey Results Show Squirt.org Most as a Site Where All Are Welcome!

TORONTO (December 21, 2015) –– In the wake of recent media articles and editorials discussing racism on gay dating websites and apps, Squirt.org conducted a survey to learn the most welcoming and diverse services available to the gay community. Of the six gay dating sites listed in the survey, over 5,400 respondents ranked Squirt.org as the most welcoming site they use.

Racism in online gay dating has been a hot topic in the media for a while. Many profiles on gay dating websites and apps have discriminatory statements, like “No Blacks” or “No Asians.” The prejudice also extends to weight and age, implying users need to be Caucasian, young, and in perfect shape to be successful when online dating.

Last week, musician and activist Denis Fernando wrote an editorial for GayStarNews.com about his own experiences with online dating discrimination. Last month, PinkNews.co.uk profiled a video from YouTube star DaveyWavey featuring gay men reacting to racist online profiles. Educator Aaron Talley also weighed in on the issue earlier this year with his op-ed for Advocate.com.

In order to quantify the issue of racism in online dating, Squirt.org surveyed its user base and asked if they feel welcomed on a list of six gay dating sites/apps. The list included Grindr, Scruff, Manhunt, Adam4Adam, Gaydar, and Squirt.org, and people were able to assign a rating of 1 to 5 for each site, with 5 being the most welcoming.

The results of the survey included responses from 5,413 gay or bi-sexual men. Squirt.org ranked the highest with an average score of 3.71. Adam4Adam received an average of 3.32; Manhunt, 3.13; Scruff, 3.11; Gaydar, 3.04; and Grindr averaged 2.92.

The survey results were also analyzed by different demographics, such as age and body type. Squirt.org scored higher across the board, particularly excelling in creating a welcoming service for users aged 60 and over, as well as 18-20 year-olds. The site was also the highest rated among body types like stocky, chubby, average, toned, slender, and muscular.

Squirt’s diversity was apparent throughout the year in its promotional images and advertising as well. A popular 2015 campaign across North America and Europe featured three gay, racially diverse men embracing. Billboards with the image appeared in many major metropolitan areas, such as Dallas, Texas and Toronto, Ontario.

“We take great pride in making sure all Squirt.org users, regardless of race, age, or physical appearance, feel welcomed when using our service,” said Attila Szatmari digital business director for Pink Triangle Press, Squirt’s parent company.

“Our goal with the promotional campaign was to promote diversity spread a positive, inclusive message,” added Szatmari. “In light of these new articles coming out about racism in gay online dating, I sincerely hope people will note there are sex-positive, inclusive options out there to meet other men online.”

The survey sent out by Squirt.org asked respondents how much they agree with the following statement: “I feel welcomed on the following sites or apps.” The Lickert scale was utilized to gather the information for each included dating service: Strongly Disagree (1), Disagree (2), Neutral (3), Agree (4), Strongly Agree (5).
